'One in, one out' deal returns 4% of migrants

One year after the UK and France launched their 'one in, one out' migration agreement, government figures show that just over 1,000 migrants have been returned to France, representing around 4% of the nearly 28,000 people who arrived in the UK on small boats during the same period. Under the arrangement, Britain returns some migrants who crossed the Channel illegally while accepting an equal number from France who have recognised family or humanitarian claims to enter the UK through safe and legal routes. Ministers say the scheme is only one part of a broader strategy that includes increased surveillance, drones, joint enforcement operations, and action against people-smuggling gangs. The agreement has now been extended beyond its original end date, while officials hope it will increasingly discourage dangerous Channel crossings. The figures were released as French authorities rescued 157 migrants after a boat caught fire during a crossing, highlighting the continuing risks faced by those attempting the journey and the urgent need to dismantle criminal trafficking networks.

Rukoilla: for compassionate and effective solutions to migration, protection for vulnerable people, and success in tackling trafficking gangs. (Psalm 146:9)
