To the Unknown God

In Athens, the cultural capital of the ancient world, Paul’s spirit was provoked as he saw a city full of idols. He reasoned in the marketplace, debated with philosophers and was invited to speak at the Areopagus. He did not mock their culture. He quoted their own poets and pointed to an altar inscribed “To the unknown god”. Then he proclaimed the God who made the world, who commands all people everywhere to repent, and who has raised Jesus from the dead. Some mocked, but some believed.

France is a world capital of art, film, fashion and music, and its culture is often deeply secular. Yet spiritual longing keeps surfacing. In autumn 2025 a low-budget film about Christian faith, Sacré-Cœur, drew more than 400,000 cinemagoers, even after public transport advertising for it was refused and a screening in Marseille was cancelled. Christian musicians, writers, painters and actors are quietly creating work that asks the deepest questions.

Pray for Christian artists in France to be excellent in their craft and faithful to Christ. Pray for the Gospel to be proclaimed with clarity and beauty, so that many who worship an unknown god may come to know the living God.

Pray for actors, musicians, writers, filmmakers and designers; for Christians in the creative industries to be salt and light; and for media and entertainment that honour truth and human dignity.

CONNECT — LA FONDERIE

La Fonderie is a Christian association in Paris that brings artists together to explore the relationship between art, culture and faith. Founded in 2002, its name means “the foundry”, a place where metal is purified and shaped. It offers Christian artists community, discipleship, retreats, coaching and prayer, because demanding schedules often leave musicians, painters and performers isolated from church life. Over the years it has hosted exhibitions, concerts and creative events open to believers and non-believers alike, building bridges into the vast artistic world of Paris.

Pray for artists to grow in Christ and to reflect the heart of God through excellent work.

Pray: Lord, the Wolof love music and storytelling. Use Christian songs, films and the Wolof Bible to reveal Jesus to Wolof families in France and Senegal, and gather a joyful Wolof church. Amen.

CITY SPOTLIGHT — SAINT-DENIS

Saint-Denis, just north of Paris, has around 149,000 inhabitants and lies in one of the youngest and most diverse areas of France. Its basilica, one of the first great Gothic churches, became the burial place of 43 kings of France. The town is also home to the Stade de France, the country’s largest stadium with 80,000 seats, which hosted events of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Saint-Denis is a place of art, sport and street culture, but also of high unemployment and poverty. Many residents have roots in Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, and many immigrant churches meet in halls and warehouses.
