Households encouraged to stay prepared in an emergency

The Government has launched a three-year 'Be Ready' campaign encouraging households to prepare for emergencies that could temporarily disrupt electricity, water, communications and other essential services. Following severe winter storms and summer wildfires, ministers are urging families to take simple, affordable precautions to cope with up to three days of disruption. Recommendations include keeping emergency supplies of bottled water and non-perishable food and registering vulnerable household members with utility companies. The initiative, following similar campaigns in France, Ireland, and the Netherlands involves more than five hundred charities, businesses and community organisations. Security minister Dan Jarvis said better household preparation would reduce pressure on emergency services, allowing them to prioritise those most vulnerable. The Red Cross welcomed the campaign, emphasising the importance of neighbours supporting one another during crises. Particular attention will be given to older people, families with young children and those experiencing financial hardship, ensuring practical advice reaches communities most at risk during unexpected emergencies.
